The Momentary is a new contemporary multi-disciplinary space for visual and performing arts, culinary experiences, music festivals, and artist residences in Bentonville, Arkansas, slated to open in 2020.  The Momentary is a subsidiary of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (the “Museum”).

Under general supervision of the Head of Collections Management, the Assistant Registrar of The Momentary is responsible for registration functions related to exhibitions hosted or organized by The Momentary.  This position will be responsible for all logistics, loan arrangements, and record-keeping for two to three major exhibitions each year at The Momentary, as well as smaller focus exhibitions, general incoming loans, and site-specific commissions.  For artist residencies at The Momentary, this position will document the resulting artworks, prepare condition reports, and coordinate packing and shipping.  The Assistant Registrar of The Momentary will also assist with exhibitions and project at the Museum.

 

Principal Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  • Manage logistics for incoming loans to The Momentary, including loan agreements, fine-art packing and shipping arrangements, and data entry in TMS (Museum’s collections database), in accordance with accepted museum standards.

  • Work closely with The Momentary’s curatorial and operations staff to plan for and execute temporary exhibitions, including collaborating cross-departmentally to create installation and de-installation schedules and arrangements for shipping, receiving, storage, packing/unpacking, and couriers.

  • Assist with the development of budgets for exhibitions.

  • Assist with securing loans from museums and private lenders.

  • Assist with obtaining insurance coverage for incoming loans and exhibitions.

  • Perform incoming and outgoing condition reports.

  • Communicate lenders’ and exhibition organizer’s requirements for environment, installation, and security and ensure requirements are met.

  • Oversee exhibition installations and deinstallations, including safe handling, installation and condition-checking of artwork.

 

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Provide support to Museum’s exhibitions program outside The Momentary, as necessary.

  • Keep apprised of approved and current museum registration standards as well as basic conservation guidelines for the care and handling of artworks.

  • Act as courier, as assigned, to accompany exhibitions and loans worldwide.

  • Assist in storage and handling of permanent collection and loans.

  • Support collections management activities including inventory and cataloguing.

  • Complete all other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibility and skill required for the job.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and Traits:

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university required, with course work in art, art history, museum studies or related field.

  • Knowledge of American Art and a familiarity with artists’ materials.

  • Knowledge of art handling standards.

  • Ability to understand and maintain the highest levels of confidentiality.

 

Work Experience:

  • Minimum two years of experience in museum registration, exhibition-related preferred.

  • Experience using complex collections database applications, The Museum System (TMS) preferred.

 

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record required.

  • Ability to obtain valid passport.

 

Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office software to include Outlook, Word, Excel.

  • Experience with budgets preferred.

  • Comfortable working with diverse constituencies, including artists, collectors, designers, museum staff and the general public.

  • Strong written and verbal communication.

  • Exceptional organizational and project-management skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to accuracy and detail.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Physical demands: In the work environment described below, position requires verbal and written conversation with others, sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching and climbing. Position requires working at a desk and utilizing a computer for prolonged periods of time and good eye/hand coordination. Vision abilities required by the job include close vision. Position requires use of hands to safely handle and move collection objects according to the most current approved museum standards. Position periodically requires standing for prolonged periods of time. Position requires occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds to a height of five feet for the purpose of accessing or storing objects. While traveling with art, position requires sitting in trucks for extended periods over long distances.

  • Work Environment: The majority of work will be performed in an office environment at the Museum, with frequent travel to the nearby Momentary facility. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Work requires independent travel as a courier to accompany exhibitions and loans worldwide. Occasional weekend, evening and night work hours also required.
