Chief Operating Officer - Jewish Museum

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will be a trusted advisor to the Museum Director and will play a critical role in managing both the day-to-day operations of this complex organization and with shaping the Museum’s strategic direction. The COO will have direct managerial oversight of several departments, including Human Resources, Legal IT, Building Operations and Security, as well as indirect oversight for the Finance Department. The COO will have a forward facing role with the Board of Trustees and other key internal and external stakeholders and will unite multiple constituencies, ensuring accountability for a healthy, sustainable operating environment.

Responsibilities:

  • As part of the executive team, drive strategic and tactical planning efforts that strengthen the Museum’s infrastructure and sustainability

  • Ensure that all financial and operational aspects of the Museum align with Museum priorities

  • Create analytical tools and processes to support decision-making and track effectiveness

  • Ensure the functional integrity and security of the Museum by overseeing the short and long-term security, building maintenance and mechanical plans

  • Help prepare for and execute major capital projects, renovations and building repairs

  • Working with the Director of IT, optimize technology across the Museum to increase organizational efficiency, improve information accessibility and ensure data security

  • Provide leadership and mentorship to a diverse team of professional staff - listening to their ideas; understanding their strengths; and encouraging each member’s professional growth

  • Promote a culture of respect that rewards collaboration, learning, accountability and initiative

  • Regularly report to the Board of Directors and key funders on areas of operational significance

  • Provide support to the Museum Director on special projects and as required or requested; serve as acting director for the institution as needed

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree, with MBA or MPA credentials or commensurate experience that demonstrates exemplary strategic and financial acumen

  • A minimum of fifteen years of financial and operational management experience; at least five years of experience at a senior managerial level

  • Strong knowledge of corporate and/or non-profit governance with significant experience interfacing with governing boards

  • Strong leadership and management skills that have influenced business culture through the development and implementation of strategic initiatives

  • Team building skills with a collaborative management style

  • Creative, conceptual and analytical thinker, with sensitivity to both the artistic and business worlds

  • Willingness to attend after-hour and weekend functions as necessary

  • Flexibility and a sense of humor
