Children’s Garden Co-Coordinator/ Supervising Instructor - Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Children Garden coordinator is responsible for implementation of year-round gardening programs for children ages 2–13. This staff member works with a co-coordinator to lead program development, schedule program series, hire and train staff, and oversee classes and gardening within the Children’s Garden. The regular work schedule for this position is Tuesday–Saturday.

Responsibilities:

  • Hire, train and supervise part-time seasonal instructors and Children’s Garden Education Fellows to provide informal education programs for pre-school, elementary, and middle school–aged children in the Children’s Garden.

  • Coordinate the nine-month Children’s Garden Education Fellows Program; plan professional development workshops and program observations to improve horticulture and teaching skills.

  • Oversee the ongoing development and delivery of a standard core curriculum for instruction of age-appropriate horticultural classes in the Children’s Garden.

  • Oversee seasonal Children’s Garden classes, helping seasonal staff create engaging, inquiry-based lessons; manage student behavior; and create a welcoming environment for children of all backgrounds and abilities.

  • Coordinate the Children’s Garden’s horticultural design and maintenance to align with seasonal instructional themes for children’s classes, including ornamental plantings and fruit and vegetable gardens.

  • Schedule and coordinate horticultural volunteers as needed.

  • Maintain and organize Children’s Garden tools, signage, and program materials; coordinate with Facilities and Maintenance departments for ongoing maintenance of historic Children’s Garden House.

  • Work with the Garden Apprentice Program (GAP) staff to train, mentor, and schedule teen apprentices assisting with Children’s Garden classes.

  • Plan and coordinate events for participants’ families, including program orientation, seasonal celebrations, open houses, and awards ceremonies.

  • Collaborate with the Director of Youth Programs to track program budgets, plan outreach and program recruitment, develop marketing materials, evaluate programs, track program statistics, and create written reports.

  • Represent the Children’s Garden to external visitors during program visits, donor recruitment events, public programs, and Garden-wide special events.

  • Assist with instruction of children’s programs including Trees and Saplings and BASE Garden Crew; substitute teach for other Children’s Garden programs as needed.

  • Provide horticultural and educational support throughout the department as needed.

  • Perform other related duties or special projects as directed.

Qualifications:

  • BA or BS degree in education, environmental education, agriculture, botany, biology, or related field (Master’s preferred)

  • Minimum of three years’ experience as an educator, including direct experience working with children

  • Experience in horticulture, preferably with food plants

  • Ability to communicate effectively with different audiences

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills

  • Ability to work outside and in greenhouses and gardens year-round

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, internet, etc.

  • Able to pass a background check for working with children

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Able to lift heavy objects and work outdoors in all weather
