Collections & Exhibitions Technician - Jewish Museum

Under the supervision of the Collections Manager, the Collections & Exhibitions Technician is responsible for overseeing the safety and storage of the museum’s collection of close to 26,000 physical objects and providing technical support for the Museum’s temporary exhibitions. The position requires five years of museum art handling experience as well framing, matting, packing, and installation expertise. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills are essential.

  • Responsible for overseeing and providing or recommending best-practices for safe storage of collection objects in the museum’s various on and offsite storerooms

  • Update and maintain current object locations in TMS database

  • Inventory newly accessioned objects by photographing, painting or sewing numbers, storing, and updating TMS with new images and home location information

  • Fabricate appropriate object housing for storage and soft-pack objects for shipment

  • Prepare objects for examination by staff, visitors, conservators, or for exhibition and loan

  • Assist with collection photo shoots by pulling, unframing, and then rehousing objects and acting as art handler on day of the shoot

  • When required, prepare objects for installation, including matting, framing, and mount installation

  • Order and keep track of packing, storage, and installation tools and supplies

  • Serve as lead art handler during installations/de-installations in temporary exhibitions and permanent collection galleries, working closely with Registrar staff to ensure best-practices in handling and installation of objects

  • Participate in exhibition team meetings

  • Take a proactive approach to periodically checking condition of objects in the storerooms. Change glassine, mats, and other housing whenever necessary; reroll textiles at advice of conservators; alert Collections Manager of any condition issues

  • Assist with special collection projects including inventory, cataloguing, and collection moves

Other duties and responsibilities:

  • Stay up-to-date on museum standards and best-practices for object handling, packing, storage, and installation

  • Maintain certification under Certified Cargo Screening Program (CCSP)

  • Help Collections Manager train new staff on art handling and object numbering

  • Assist Registrar staff with maintenance tasks in temporary exhibitions

  • Arrange for regular cleaning of storage rooms by Operations staff

  • Periodically check condition of installed collection objects

  • Conceptualize most efficient use of space in various storerooms

  • Maintain empty frame and empty crate inventory

  • Work closely with Curators on research requests


  • At least five years museum art handling experience

  • Familiarity with object materials and preventive conservation required

  • Knowledge of object storage, handling, and installation best-practices

  • Matting, framing, and packing skills

  • Demonstrated experience leading art handling crews, including the ability to effectively delegate

  • Careful work style, attention to detail and ability to communicate effectively

  • Ability to work independently and in a flexible manner with a variety of individuals

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Computer knowledge and familiarity with TMS
