Director—Publications and Interpretation - Brooklyn Museum

The Brooklyn Museum seeks an experienced publishing professional with expertise in the specialized area of museum books and catalogues as well as in-gallery exhibition and related interpretive materials.


  • 5 to 8 years of experience in museum publishing and managing general museum editorial work

  • Experience as the primary project editor of large-scale art books, with a distinguished record in museum publishing

  • Proven effectiveness in managing complex collaborations with graphic designers, exhibition designers, educators, photo researchers, publicists, fundraisers, legal counsel, and merchandisers

  • Experience negotiating book contracts with commercial publishers

  • Experience writing author agreements

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • A secure grasp of the language of art history and contemporary criticism

  • Dedication to building relationships of trust with the Museum’s authors

  • Commitment to equality as an institutional goal

  • Steady hand at navigating complex schedules and deadlines


  • Manage departmental staff, including any hiring

  • Consult regularly with the Graphic Design and Editorial Services department (within Marketing and Communications) on matters of overall house style

  • Consult and coordinate with the editors in the Graphic Design and Editorial Services department on exhibition-related marketing and public information materials (such as press releases and website exhibition descriptions)

For book projects:

  • Develop new-book concepts, in both print and digital formats, with curators and administration

  • Manage peer review of manuscripts

  • Review project photography

  • Prepare publication budgets

  • Supervise book work done by staff and freelance editors

  • For co-published books: research prospective co-publishing partners and develop relationships with trade houses and university presses, and supervise the full production process in collaboration with co-publishers and Museum staff

  • Write author contracts for outside contributors to Museum publications

  • Edit selected individual books

For exhibition labels and related materials:

  • Participate in exhibition messaging and kickoff meetings, contributing editorial input to the planning of interpretive materials

  • Review exhibition budgets to make sure provisions are made for freelance editorial support, translators, and so forth

  • Review all draft exhibition label packages, coordinate text review with Education, and recommend revisions and rewrites

  • Act as line editor for labels and text panels of selected exhibitions

  • Evaluate line-by-line work of staff and contract editors on books and labels

  • Hire freelance editorial support as needed

  • Oversee the production scheduling of exhibition labels and related in-gallery materials
