 The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the operations, programming, and fundraising to ensure the long-term viability of this prestigious presidential site. The Executive Director will work with the Wilson House Advisory Council, other staff from the the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and community stakeholders to create a dynamic strategic plan for the site and will be fully responsible for implementing the plan and for creating and implementing operational, programming and funding plans for a financially-sustainable site. The Executive Director will be qualified and experienced in monitoring budgets and the strategic plan using performance measures.  

 Through events, programs, partnerships and communications at the site, the Executive Director will lead the continued exploration and presentation of its rich history, especially that of President Wilson, his administration and life in the early 20th Century. While the Executive Director will have the flexibility to set priorities, it will be important for them to fully embrace the sites’ strategic themes for the next few years of inclusive stories that represent the full history of the site (especially African American and women’s histories), and a recognition of and programming around the centennial years of Wilson’s administration. The Executive Director will report to the Louis B. Potter Director of Strategic Planning and Development and on will work in collaboration with National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) headquarters staff, especially the Historic Sites Department’s technical support positions in collections, financial, interpretation, planning, governance, and architecture, along with the Senior Vice President for Historic Sites.

The Executive Director will be responsible for individual, corporate, foundation, and government fundraising to support the ongoing operations at the site, and expansion of the site’s reserves to sustain its long-term operations. S/he will also continue the development of an advisory council to achieve the site’s financial self-sufficiency and to strengthen governance practices in keeping with the National Trust’s vision for its historic sites.  

 It is expected that the Executive Director will be positioned full time at the Wilson House and will manage a full-time staff of three and additional 10 part-time guide and housekeeping staff. At the Wilson House, the Executive Director will provide daily leadership and strategic direction to the other full-time positions of the Business Manager, Marketing and Events Manager, and the Senior Manager of Interpretation and Collections to ensure cohesive and effective operations and comprehensive, meaningful impact of mission-related activities.  

 About the Wilson House

In 1921, President Wilson and his wife Edith retired from the White House to an elegant townhome located in the Embassy Row neighborhood of Washington, DC. While the President would only live in the home for the final three years of his life, Mrs. Wilson remained in residence for another 37 years, bequeathing the house and contents to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1961.

The President Woodrow Wilson House opened to the public in 1963, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. Built in 1915 by noted American architect Waddy Wood, who also designed such significant Washington, DC buildings as the Department of the Interior and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the house is a fine example of the Georgian Revival style. Today the sitecontains more than 8200 objects including state gifts, fine and decorative arts, textiles, books, and photographs - all that present a glimpse into Wilson as an educator, president, world statesman, and peacemaker - through tours, exhibits, artist residencies, and educational programs.

In these Centennial years of the Wilson House there have been great strides made in revitalizing the house, attracting new audiences and representing the full history, especially that of African Americans and Wilson’s segregationist policies. However there remains tremendous potential for further strategic and creative use of the site to engage, inform, and inspire the public through inclusive programming, and build relationships with neighbors, new and existing partners, and other stakeholders. As well, the impressive Wilson House collection provides many opportunities for interesting programmatic work, as do the very relevant ideas, tensions, and stories associated with the nation’s 28th President and the times in which he lived.


Site and Program Management

  • Work closely with the site’s Business Manager to develop and implement annual budgets, safety plans, performance measurements and reports, standardized training, guide supervision plans, and maintenance plans and budgets.

  • Build on current successful programs and work closely with the Sr. Manager Interpretation and Collections to develop and implement interpretation and collections plans and sustainable budgets, build visitation, engage both new and repeat visitors, analyze and improve tours, and increase program revenue.

  • Work closely with the site’s Manager of Marketing and Events to develop collateral materials and website redesign and to develop and implement the overall communications, sales, outreach, booking, budgets and marketing plans. Together develop plans to grow special property use, diverse audience visitation and gift shop revenue.

  • Develop, manage and maintain a balanced operating budget at all times, including tracking expenses and meeting revenue goals. Ensure that financial reports required by NTHP’s finance and sites departments are completed in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Supervise, retain, and recruit when needed, well-qualified and culturally diverse staff: hire and train new full-time staff when needed; guide the development of workplans, organize overall workflow; monitor direct reports’ productivity and performance, provide constructive feedback and coaching, and conduct annual performance reviews; work with the National Trust, direct reports and Office of Human Resources as needed to identify, respond to, and resolve problems or performance issues as they arise. Monitor and approve timekeeping and related budget for direct reports.

  • Work closely with the Graham Gund Architect to develop and monitor major repair or capital projects at the site.

  • During emergency events, implement the appropriate plans and manage employees and volunteers, take measures to protect the property and communicate updates to HQ staff.

  • Act as spokesperson for the site, monitor site brand and messaging and ensure alignment with National Trust brand and messaging.

  • Work with supervisor and NTHP on all partnerships to ensure agreements and contracts are aligned and appropriate.


  • Expand corporate, foundation, government, and individual giving to ensure growth and support for ongoing preservation and site operations to meet or exceed budget targets and programming goals.

  • Create and manage a portfolio of prospects through solicitation, and engaging others in the cultivation and solicitation process.

  • Develop targeted fundraising and donor cultivation events and tours.

  • Analyze and improve donor management database

  • Serve as liaison to and communicate closely with NTHP Sites Department and Development and Marketing Division staff at headquarters.

  • Identify and manage strategy and tracking systems to involve new individual donors in a variety of categories.

  • Ensure donor recognition as appropriate.

 Advisory Council Development & Management

  • Work, closely with the Louise B. Potter Director Strategic Planning and Development to develop and implement a plan for leading the site advisory council, including identification of needed expertise and capacities, development of recruitment materials and charter documents, and identification of and approach to individuals for membership.

  • Manage ongoing council meetings, communications, recruitment, events, and philanthropy by individual members.

 Communications & Engagement

  • Develop and implement a plan to promote site programming and private rentals at the local, national, and international levels through social media, group tour outreach, tourism bureaus, and new partnerships.


  • At least 12 years of professional level experience overall, including at least 5 years’ experience in an executive capacity with demonstrated experience and success budgeting, staffing, supervising professionals and leading teams to generate high quality results.

  • Minimum 7 years direct experience in fundraising, site management, or other related positions. Proven leadership in development areas of campaigns, donor cultivation, membership development and organizational coordination. Prior work in the cultural heritage/museum/historic sites world is preferred.

  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, including issue identification and prioritization.

  • Advanced project-management, team-management and client-management skills. Ability to achieve results with limited supervision.

  • Experience supervising professional staff, as well as successfully managing key internal and external stakeholders and relationships.

  • Proven ability to collaborate across departments to implement processes and achieve results, as well as to work collaboratively with a small, dedicated team. Track record of building and maintaining productive relationships with multiple stakeholders.

  • Highly organized, with ability to prioritize, multi-task efficiently and respond to a high volume of ongoing requests in a timely fashion.

  • Ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic work environment, including working effectively with frequent interruptions and handling changing and/or unscheduled tasks with accuracy. Public contact and ability to work successfully near others required.

  • Personable style with effective presentation skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to articulate the site’s mission to a wide range of audiences in a variety of ways.

  • Demonstrated success in marketing to and engaging culturally diverse audiences and partners. Connections within culturally diverse professional and social affinity organizations a plus.

  • Entrepreneurial spirit and skill set essential.

  • Proven ability to continually develop skills related to use of rapidly changing technology and communications best practices.

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel required. Familiarity with other software, including donor or related databases, presentation software and social media platforms, a plus.

  • Bachelor’s degree and master’s degree (or equivalent years of experience) required.

  • Regular and reliable attendance required.

  • Limited travel required.
