The Manager of Family Engagement is responsible for the strategic development and execution of a wide range of family education and engagement experiences both on- and off-site. The Manager will research, conceptualize, implement, and evaluate a dynamic slate of programs designed to engage family audiences with our core galleries and special exhibition content, and that drive the museum’s social impact and financial goals. The manager will collaborate with staff across the Museum to build inclusive and intergenerational family engagement programs and to provide a welcoming and comfortable environment for visitors of all ages.

Program Research, Implementation, Evaluation

  • Design, develop, and implement age-appropriate, intergenerational, on- and off-site experiences (paid and free) for families related to exhibition content and cultural celebrations

  • Design program outlines/outcomes, lesson plans, and partnership curricula that support diverse learning styles and 21st Century museum experiences

  • Design and develop interdisciplinary, age-appropriate family resources that make connections with OMCA’s permanent collection, exhibitions on view, and cultural celebrations

  • Research, contract, and manage program participants (e.g. artists, historians, scientists, businesses, libraries, schools, community centers, and organizations, etc) for deepening and broadening the museum’s civic engagement and participation of diverse communities

  • Supervise and support the planning, implementation, and evaluation of family access programs including free programs, partnership programs, and programs for families with youth with disabilities

  • Develop comprehensive business and program plans for an expansion of revenue-generating OMCA Summer Camps. Explore additional opportunities for revenue-generating family programs

  • Develop and facilitate trainings for museum educators and teaching artists; evaluate their performance through regular observations and meetings

  • Supervise and collaborate with the Public Programs Developer (Intergenerational) as well as museum educators and teaching artists

  • Conduct evaluations and assessments of family programs to ensure all programs meet the Center for Audience and Civic Engagement’s objectives and goals

  • Work collaboratively with the Public Engagement, Learning Initiatives, and Exhibition teams, as well as other museum departments as appropriate and necessary to ensure offerings are engaging, accessible, and inclusive visitor experiences

  • Work closely with in-house evaluation team to design program evaluations in support of institutional goals/outcomes




  • Working collaboratively with staff from across the organization, oversee the successful implementation of OMCA family programs

  • Manage, oversee, and develop budget and track annual expenses for OMCA family programs

  • Manage family program projects and initiatives, including supervising project-based staff and volunteers (such as museum educators and interns), managing project-specific budgets, timelines, recruiting program participants, preparing internal reports, and providing recommendations for program growth

  • Manage, negotiate, and oversee professional services contracts/consultants as needed

  • Work with the Development Department to develop proposals and reports for funding, including grants, foundation, and sponsorship materials

  • Work with the Communications Department to create, gather, and update website content and other marketing materials related to family programs

  • Maintain departmental administrative files and pertinent content related information for all family programs

  • Provide family program attendance data for evaluative purposes, grant proposals, reports and funding initiatives, as needed




  • Attend meetings with museum administration as needed

  • Teach/facilitate family programs as necessary

  • Represent the Museum during educational fairs and career days as needed

  • Engage with local artists, institutions, organizations, and community members to build networks, collaborations, program diversity and audience engagement



  • Ability to deliver results, facilitate and influence others and problem solve beyond temporary solutions

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field of study (Art, History, Science, Education, Museum Education) required

  • 5-7 years of related experience required with increasing responsibility including budget management and supervision of staff/volunteers; demonstrated interest in and enthusiasm for museum education

  • Experience working with diverse audiences and communities

  • Knowledge of child development, museum/arts education theory, evaluation methods and experience developing lesson plans, educational materials, and programs preferred

  • Ability to develop new and relevant teaching curricula and collaborate with others to design and implement innovative teaching materials for diverse audiences in a variety of settings

  • Excellent interpersonal and public speaking skills and the ability to work enthusiastically and effectively with visitors, museum staff, program participants, and external vendors

  • Demonstrated experience building organizational partnerships and engaging new audiences through community outreach

  • Patience and flexibility while working in a dynamic public environment

  • Demonstrated time management skills with the ability to organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and work effectively on multiple projects with minimum supervision

  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, InDesign, and Internet Database management skills desirable

  • English language proficiency in both spoken and written form required

  • Proficiency in additional languages, particularly Spanish or Mandarin, a plus
