Museum Educator (Tinkering Specialist) - Exploratorium

Position

The Tinkering Studio Museum Educator/Tinkering Specialist uses their educational background, teaching and facilitation skills to design, build, present and facilitate informal science, art, and technology workshops in collaboration with Exploratorium Tinkering Studio staff, visiting artists, scientists, and educators. The position requires the ability to facilitate adult and youth visitors in the Tinkering Studio which is the public space for making and tinkering on the exhibition floor. The Tinkering Studio Museum Educator/Tinkering Specialist is also responsible for the fabrication of new activity elements, environmental designs, and technical support for tinkering program elements. This position reports to the Director of the Tinkering Studio. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Participate in the creation of content and ongoing design and fabrication for workshops.

  • Provide facilitation for Exploratorium visitors in the Tinkering Studio.

  • Coordinate and interface with visiting artists, and collaborate with makers through the Tinkering Studio programs.

  • Lead new design and fabrication of environmental treatments and installations on the exhibit floor.

  • Prototype and produce props, examples, activity models, and other interactive elements for the Tinkering Studio and Tinkering networks

  • Collaborate with Exploratorium exhibit developers, and participate in exhibit shop guidelines and processes.

  • Contribute to Tinkering Studio environmental maintenance, exhibit maintenance, material ordering and stocking, and equipment upkeep.

  • Lead mentoring and support for Tinkering Studio team members in the use of tools, construction materials, fabrication methods, and processes.

  • Serve as liaison with other Exploratorium departments in support of Learning Studio and Tinkering Studio programs.

  • Participate in department meetings, events, and programs.

  • Ability to use a computer and general office equipment; move from place to place; lift and carry up to 25 pounds short distances; reach, bend, and twist.

  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree, in education or a closely related field, and 5 years’ experience teaching, training, or facilitating workshops, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Two or more years’ exhibit development, activity fabrication, environmental design, or arts installation experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in formal and informal educational settings.

  • A proven track record of partnership with the local and national arts, science, and education community.

  • Demonstrated vision and enthusiasm for the future of educational technologies and community of visiting artists, scientists and educators.

  • Intermediate technical skills including woodworking, metal and/or plastic fabrication, metalwork, and digital tools.

  • Willingness to travel internationally to lead tinkering programs, design workshops, and partner meetings.

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication and writing skills.

  • Experience designing activities and professional development workshops for educator audiences (i.e. museums, maker spaces, classrooms, and studio-type learning environments).
