Part-time, 11-week program 

Oakland Museum of California’s paid Summer 2019  Internship Program is now accepting applicants! We are seeking 14 interns who are eager to explore careers in museums, proactive, adaptable, excited to take on new challenges, and looking to join an organization dedicated to community and learning.  Interns can apply to multiple internships across museums departments inclduing Curatorial, Registration, Exhibit Experience Development, Media Production & Installment, Graphic Design, Public Engagement & Programming, Education, Marketing & Communications, Human Resources, Social Impact Finance, and more. Interns will support the day-to-day functions of their departments;  take on large-scale special projects including OMCA’s 50th Anniversary and website re-org; helm and execute community engagement programs; work directly with museum artifact handling and collections preservation;  plan, design, implement, and curate innovative exhibits; and ensure incredible visitor experiences. Curatorial Intern (Natural Science discipline) – Oakland Museum of California

The Curatorial Intern will support the research, development and implementation of in-gallery visitor experiences specifically related to the Natural Sciences gallery, which showcases California’s diversity of climate, geology, habitats, ecosystems, and wildlife, while exploring current research, contemporary issues of land use, environmental conflict, and conservation projects.

During this internship, you will get hands-on experience re-developing Natural Science lab spaces, with new prompts and interfaces, and contribute to Natural Sciences gallery and exhibition development and planning.

Exhibit Experience Development Intern– Oakland Museum of California

The Experience Development Intern will support the research, development and implementation of in-gallery visitor experiences such as object interpretation, interactive exhibits and visitor-contributed content opportunities.

You will learn about the planning and development of museum exhibits, including:

The phases of the development and design process

Strategies for meeting the needs of different types of learners and audiences,  including ADA guidelines and interpretive approaches for informal learning environments

Strategies for interpreting art, history and natural science information to museum visitors in creative and engaging ways

You will gain direct experience in:

Providing assistance with experience development projects including object, prop, image and media research, and testing exhibit prototypes

Considering visitors of different ages, interests and abilities, and strategies for meeting their needs

Exhibit Interpretive Plans; writing exhibit descriptions and experience briefs

Preparation and Production Intern– Oakland Museum of California

The Preparation and Production Intern will work as part of a team that constructs, installs and maintains museum exhibits. You will learn best practices and museum standards for exhibit fabrication, installation and maintenance. You will gain familiarity with specialized skills used in the production of museum exhibits including wall preparation and painting, woodworking, art handling, transportation of collections, graphics production, frame-shop techniques and mount-making.

Through interaction with museum professionals and hands-on experience you will learn museum standards for wall painting, basic art handling, basic woodworking, installation of graphics, and maintenance of exhibits and transportation of collections. 

You will learn about and gain direct experience in:

Assisting with weekly maintenance of exhibits in all gallery spaces (Art, History, Natural Sciences)

Assisting with scheduled exhibit and collections rotations

Assisting with transportation of exhibit and collections materials

Registration Intern– Oakland Museum of California

The Registration Intern will support the registration department with cataloging, accessioning, loans, collections documentation, imaging, as well as object handling and data reconciliation. You will gain familiarity with CollectionSpace (OMCA’s collections management system). The position will work closely with OMCA registrars to learn best practices and museum standards in collections management and registration.

You will get hands-on experience in the areas of museum artifact handling, storage practice, and collections preservation. You will also have the opportunity to work with curatorial and conservation staff.

 You will learn about and gain direct experience with the following:

Creating and editing digital catalog records

Tracking and updating object locations

Object handling and re-housing collection objects in archival housing

Organizing registration documentation

Photographing and imaging collections objects

Possible enrichment opportunities with exhibitions and outgoing loans

Education Intern– Oakland Museum of California

OMCA's school and community programs are a vital part of the museum. The Education Intern will participate in implementing summer programming, supporting development of resources for the docent tours, curriculum development, educational program planning, and/or development of educational tools to assist visitors in making connections to the exhibitions. 

You will get hands-on experience in museum program development and implementation. You will gain knowledge related to communications and public programs, and have the opportunity to work with families, volunteers and education programming staff.

You will learn about and gain direct experience in:

Assisting with program implementation, including supporting educators in teaching and leading program activities across disciplines and media

Assisting with preparing program supplies and spaces for summer programs

Conducting research that supports program development, culturally relevant teaching practices, and audience development

Media Production & Installment Intern– Oakland Museum of California

The Media Production and Installation Intern will participate in the ongoing maintenance of media-based exhibits in the museum’s galleries. You will have opportunities for hands-on experience working with media installations in a museum setting; participate in troubleshooting and repairs to media-based installations and interactive exhibits; and work closely with experienced professionals to learn about techniques and specific equipment used in museum exhibitions.

You will learn about and gain direct experience in:

Weekly maintenance of gallery media equipment

Assisting with the upkeep of the museum’s media equipment inventory

Performing troubleshooting to identify and solve problems when they occur

Assist with the installation or de-installation of scheduled media rotations

Video projectors, multi channel audio installations, video monitors, media players, microscopes, iPads, Mac Mini’s, formatting protocols and networked controllers.

Public Engagement Program Intern– Oakland Museum of California

The Public Engagement Program Intern will participate in multi-disciplinary event/program management for diverse audiences through program administrative research, development, implementation, and reporting. Programs range from intimate hands-on family art activities, to large-scale festivals, ranging from scholastic topics to informal education participatory activities. 

You will have skill building opportunities in production and logistics planning, artist liaison responsibilities, marketing/communication materials, in addition to collaboration, cultural and community engagement practices for intergenerational participation. Special projects include Summer programming, preparation for the Annual Days of the Dead cultural community celebration, and Friday Nights @ OMCA.

You will learn about and gain direct experience in:

 Program Development: research & development

Program planning, tracking & logistics

Contracting and managing artist, program performers and participants

Collaboration, cultural and community engagement practices

Post program documentation and evaluation
