Position Overview: The position of Protection Services Manager is a vital role within Crystal Bridges. It is the Managers duty to oversee the day to day operations of the Protection Services staff while ensuring a safe environment for the Museum’s guests, members, volunteers, staff and the collections. It is necessary to supervise the enforcement of internal and external security procedures which safeguard the museum’s assets and oversee the operations of the electronic security and fire systems. These responsibilities will be accomplished through a strong ability to manage, empower and mentor individuals and teams as well as fostering quality relationships that promote the mission of Protection Services. A Manager must also be a conduit of collaboration between Protection Services and the Museum to accomplish the mission and to help build a diverse and professional staff while working to reduce turnover within the department.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Plan, lead, and manage daily security operations in coordination with the Director of Protection Services

  • Develops, updates, and administers a comprehensive security training program for Security Officers, Supervisors, and Administrators

  • Supervise Interior and Exterior Protection Specialists, Shift Leads and Control Room Operators

  • Supervise staff and manage the safety/security concerns of the facility during events before and after normal open hours

  • Provide employee counseling and coaching as it relates to job performance and job related factors

  • Schedule Protection Services Department staff to adequately cover hours of operation within designated budget

  • Respond to and resolve visitor, volunteer and staff inquiries, complaints and emergencies; enforce Museum policies and procedures in a manner that ensures a positive outcome for all

  • Initiates investigations into policy violations, injuries, hazards, and other incidents as directed

  • Conduct pre-shift meetings with staff to outline the events of the day

  • Educate and train, non-protection services staff regarding safety practices and emergency procedures

  • Report security and safety issues promptly to the Director of Protection Services

  • Inspect safety and security equipment weekly and remedy failures or weaknesses by appropriate procedural means

  • Prepare and review various departmental reports

  • Work closely with Guest Services Department to insure a high level of customer service is maintained

  • Open and close the Museum Facility/ Grounds based on hours of operation

  • Perform all duties of Interior and Exterior Protection Specialists, Shift Leads and Control Room Operators

  • Proactively seek and obtain information regarding Museum policies/promotions, activities and events in order to provide a high level of customer service

  • Manages the museum’s security systems and technologies, recommending necessary improvements, remediation, and upgrades as needed

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and Traits:

  • High School graduate, Associate’s degree or equivalent industry training preferred. (Four-year degree desired in Criminal Justice, Business Administration or related field)

  • Four (4) to six (6) years’ related experience in security or law enforcement at a supervisory or leadership level

  • Must be 21 years of age

  • Ability to lead/manage individuals and teams from diverse backgrounds and experiences and investigate and resolve internal staffing issues as they arise

  • Proficient level experience with Microsoft Office applications

  • Strong documentation and/or report writing skills

  • Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer service in a public environment

  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety equipment and procedures

  • Demonstrated proficiency with problem solving and conflict resolution skills, and diplomacy

  • Current or previous certification in CPR and First Aid

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to interact effectively with a wide array of personalities and attitudes

  • Must have significant understanding of security, fire, and life safety systems and procedures as well as integration of such systems

  • Knowledge of the National Incident Management System and Incident Command System purpose, design, and use is preferred

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 4 years related experience including increasing levels of supervisory duty; prefer experience in a public environment

  • Physical demands: Position requires working in Museum Galleries for prolonged periods of time. This position requires standing, walking and climbing stairs, bending and stretching, and physical stamina to lift a minimum of 50 pounds unassisted. This position requires visual acuity to review written materials is required for this job.

  • Work Environment:  Work will be performed in museum spaces and on museum trails. Additionally, strong communication skills and ability to interact politely and effectively with a wide range of Museum members, guest, volunteers and staff. Effectively utilize museum communications system. Communicate with public safety, fire and other local or state emergency personnel in an effective and calm manor.

  • Position requires supervisors to work rotating shifts in order to learn and facilitate departmental and facility needs.

  • Position requires ongoing flexibility in work hours due to events, staffing needs and other factors.
