Senior Human Resource Generalist - Exploratorium


This senior Human Resources position helps to lead select HR functions for our multi-dimensional organization.  As part of a diverse and dynamic team, this position’s primary role is to support employee and labor relations, compensation, policy and procedure, and benefits. The Senior HR Generalist also works with the team to implement staff training, performance management, retention, recruiting, and onboarding.  This position reports to the Senior Manager, Human Resources, and is part of the Organizational Development department which also includes Volunteer Engagement, Diversity and Inclusion, and Internal Communications.


Primary Duties

  • Advise and act as a resource for employees and managers on HR related policies, programs, procedures and practices.

  • Handle employee relations issues.

  • Administer the compensation program, including job descriptions, job analysis, and job evaluation. 

  • Lead day-to-day administration of workers compensation and retirement plans.

  • Provide backup for all benefits plan administration, including open enrollment.

  • Manage updates to the Employee Handbook, and support the development of new policies, review of current policies and procedures, and development of new forms and processes.

  • Assist the Director, Organizational Development with the management of the organization’s relationship with the union through contract interpretation, grievance handling and participation in contract negotiations, as well as the practice of positive union relations.

HR Team Participation and Support

  • Perform key functions of the recruiting/hiring cycle including but not limited to formatting job descriptions, posting, and candidate screening, with an emphasis on inclusive practices.

  • Perform HRIS input and ensure accuracy and confidentiality of all employee data and salary information.  

  • Conduct exit interviews and provide analysis of results.

  • Conduct new employee orientations as needed.

  • Represent the department at internal and external meetings as required. Work cooperatively with payroll and other internal departments as needed.

  • Keep current on and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment regulations; existing and new legislation; management on needed actions.

  • Generate and prepare a variety of HR reports to support the needs and requirements of the organization and various local, state and federal requirements.

  • Provide training to staff on HR related issues.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


  • Minimum of five years' increasingly responsible human resources generalist experience with exposure to multiple HR disciplines.

  • Experience and demonstrated success in handling a wide range of employee relations issues.

  • Experience developing and administering compensation practices and philosophy.

  • Prior experience in a union work setting, with experience handling labor relations issues, including grievances, preferred.

  • BA degree in human resources, psychology, business administration, or related field desired, but not required.

  • Human Resources Certification desired, SPHR preferred.

  • Good knowledge of employee benefits.

  • Human Resources Information Systems experience, Ascentis preferred.

  • Excellent knowledge of Word and Excel.

  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.

  • Policy writing/development experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy.  Ability to communicate with staff at all levels.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgement and maintain strict confidentiality.

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, meet deadlines and handle multiple priorities.

  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to a dynamic team of professionals

  • Collaborative, creative and open with the ability to work in a non-traditional environment
