Senior Manager: Capital Campaign - Exploratorium

Reporting to the Director of Institutional Advancement, this individual manages the Exploratorium’s Capital Campaign, including endowment, term endowment, unrestricted and grant funding. All aspects of daily campaign strategy and fundraising are overseen by this position including identification, research, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, benefits fulfillment, gift tracking and renewal. The position manages the Donor Communications Manager. 


  • Under the direction of the Director of Institutional Advancement, manage all aspects of the capital campaign

  • Develop multi-year strategies and plans for meeting revenue goals

  • Design prospect cultivation and solicitation strategies to align donor interests with the interests of the institution

  • Work across departments to highlight programs that support ongoing work and mission, while providing value to targeted funders

  • Oversee development of proposals and solicitations, ensuring correctness and accuracy of all content including legal and accounting concerns, as well as the appropriateness of the program content

  • Manage large gifts and ensure timely fulfillment of any obligations and reporting requirements

  • Manage budget and revenue projections with Finance team, with special attention to revenue modeling and reporting

  • Staff and manage the Board Governance Committee, Special Gifts Committee and weekly Leadership Call, including preparation of agendas, reports and presentations, members of the committee and meeting logistics

  • Direct processes and tools for campaign gift tracking; ensure accuracy of input

  • Oversee and conduct prospect research

  • Manage Donor Communication Manager, including development of work plan, goals and professional development

  • Approve campaign materials, proposals and collateral before they are shared externally

  • Physical requirements include ability to move from place to place, use a computer terminal and telephone; able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds short distances; can bend, twist, reach and grasp

  • Additional duties as assigned


  • BA/BS degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred

  • 4 years’ experience in a development office environment or equivalent

  • Progressively responsible development experience in capital campaign management and/or proposal management, reporting and constituent cultivation preferred

  • Excellent writing and editing skills

  • Ability to work in a high-pressure environment with frequent deadlines and balance competing priorities

  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to work flexibly and in a team environment

  • Excellent communication skills including ability to successfully work with board members, volunteers and community leadership

  • Ability to work well with a diverse museum staff

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize, and organize multiple projects

  • Able to exhibit tact and diplomacy in a confidential environment

  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Salesforce); proficiency with database systems; able to work at computer up to 85% of time

  • Willingness to work nights and weekends as needed
