Staff Accountant - Bostonian Society

This position is part of an administration team reporting directly to the Director of Finance and Administration. The Staff Accountant will work with the Office Manager and Executive Assistant to provide company-wide support services in office management, finance, payroll, HR, and IT support.  This is a great opportunity for an accountant to get an operational view of a growing nonprofit organization.   • Weekly Accounts Payable – manually enter bills, obtain approvals, split by funds, execute AP runs.

  • Biweekly Payroll – manually enter hourly workers’ time, update benefits, execute payroll.

  • Manage the paperwork process of onboarding and offboarding staff, both full time and seasonal.

  • Credit card and bank reconciliations.

  • Assist Development department with grant tracking.

  • Coordinate weekly with Commercial Operations department for timely and accurate data imports from their inventory sales system to our accounting system.

  • Monthly journal entries to accrue and allocate expenses by department.

    • Monthly reconciliation with Development revenue reports.

    • Monthly reconciliation with Commercial Operations’ reports.

  • Provide support for the annual audit and annual budget process.

  • Periodic research and reporting for the Director on specific accounts.

  • Working with Director to create improvements in procedures and computerize manual processes.

  • Spend 10% to 20% of time providing office management support as part of the office team.


  • 1+ years of accounting experience

  • Training or education in accounting

  • Journal Entry experience

  • Excellent time management, attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks/priorities

  • High level of discretion and maturity

  • Ability to thrive and learn in our fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment while bringing an enthusiastic, collaborative approach to your work

Full time salaried, benefits eligible, generous time off package.

General office hours are 9 to 5, Monday through Friday.

Physical Requirements:

The work of this position takes place both in a regular office environment and at a historic site. Some staff offices are located on the third floor of a 300 year old historic building without an elevator. Incumbent should be able to carry supplies up and down stairs.
